Hi All
I have been reading so many other blogs of people going through braces and orthognathic surgery, and they have been so helpful and inspiring, that I have decided to create my own.
Background: About 3 years ago (I can't remember exactly when), I started waking up with immense pain in my teeth. Went to the dentist thinking I had cavities, only to hear something that sounded incredibly odd ot me - "you grind your teeth at night"! Long story short, got a night guard which I wore religiously, but over time started noticing a massive shift in my bite. This was due to idopathic condylar resorption.
My OS (the best n the city where I live in Australia), told me nobody knew for sure why this happened (hence the "idiopathic" bit), and that it was extremely rare, and we needed to wait until the process in the joints stopped before we could do anything at all.
So I waited patiently and took x-rays every half a year or so, until one day he said with confidence that my condyles had stopped "resorbing", and I was ready for braces.
Fast forward 1 year and 2 months, and I have a surgery date booked. I have a terrible open bite, overbite, weak chin and lip incompetence - a charming combination where I have to struggle to bring my lips together, and I cannot bite into anything and can only chew on my very back molars and wisdom teeth.
Tonight I am freaking out, as I have been over the past few days/weeks about my surgeries (booked for 31 March 2011). I have an appointment with my oral surgeon tomorrow morning to take dental moulds and come up with a surgery plan... shouldn't this have been done ages ago?? Anyways, I have a 3-page list of questions for him, which if we dont' get through tomorrow I am going to INSIST on another appointment before my final pre-op one (2 days before the surgery).
Last time I saw him he said I will most likely have a Lefort I Osteotomy, a Sagittal Split Osteotomy, and possibly a genioplasty for my chin.
I will write an update tomorrow - Wish me luck!!!!!
B
Hi Barbara!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my blog is helpful! I don't mind reliving my experience, as I am stronger now I have been through it. Feel free to send any questions you have my way. I think I saw you post on Archwired. I don't comment too much there anymore, but I'm happy to answer questions via email. I saw that you surgery was postponed...quite a bummer! I'm sorry! I know the frustration! I was in braces for 3 years before surgery. (Plus having them as a teenager). I hope that everything works out so you can have surgery this year!
Let me know if I can help out!
-Mary
PS I tried to send you an email but it wouldn't go through...?
Hi Barbara, I have been diagnosed with CR and I am also in Australia - is there any way that I can contact you? I hope things are going well for you.
